Kingsmead Bookfair 2019

Kingsmead Bookfair 2019 is done and dusted.  It was an honour to be the curator of the children’s and teen programmes of the fair this year and to get a chance to engage with authors from South Africa and abroad.  While I love any bookish event there were a few highlights that stood out for me:

  • A young child tugging on her mother’s sleeve to ‘hurry up, we’ll miss the book reading!” Such excitement for books warms my heart.
  • Local authors getting a chance to share their stories.  Selling books in South Africa is hard work. Building a reading culture is vital and giving authors a platform to share and sell their books is key.
  • The concentration on children’s faces as they listened to a story that captured their imagination.
  • The writing workshops which were so well supported. We need more writers in the world.
  • The laughter and enjoyment I heard bubbling out of the classrooms.
  • The creativity that reading inspires.  Children were drawing, reading, playing and singing as they walked around the fair.
  • Happy eating!  Books and food seem to go hand in hand for the things that make us happy 🙂
  • The honesty children show when you ask them what they like and don’t like.  I love an honest reviewer and value genuine feedback.

On that note, if you attended the Kingsmead Bookfair 2019, please share your feedback at booktreeinfo@gmail.com with the heading Kingsmead Bookfair 2019 and one lucky reviewer will receive a book to read, based on your child’s age.

If you missed the fair – keep an eye out for next year’s fair in May 2020. Check out the programme from this year too:
