Library Lion

Written by Michelle Knudsen and illustrated by Kevin Hawkes  (Walker Books)

Ages 4-6, 7-9

Everyone knows libraries have special rules.  So what to do when a lion enters the library and doesn’t want to leave?  Miss Merriweather, the head librarian, is quite put out at first but she soon realises that he just wants to listen to story time and help her out.  Soon everyone gets used to the lion who loves the library – except for the library assistant Mr McBee who can’t understand why this lion is allowed to stay.  The children love lying against him, his big padded feet make no sound and he has learnt that he’s not allowed to roar inside the library.  Then one day something happens to make him roar out loud and Mr McBee is furious. The lion has his reasons but lion knows he’s broken the rules so he’ll have to go.  Only soon Mr McBee reaslises that ‘sometimes there was a good reason to break the rules.  Even in the library.’

e book: A family favourite – we also love the online reading by actress Mindy Sterling on Storyline Online here.

Library Lion makes me think of the lions outside the New York Public library – make a point of visiting if you’re in the neighborhood one day – they are beautiful.
