Ever wonder what other families are having for dinner?  Gem is a lovely little cookbook that answers just that – it’s a compilation of much-loved recipes from a group of families who have handed over their family favorites.  Covering breakfast, starters, soups, pasta, meat, chicken, fish, vegetarian meals, side dishes, desserts, cakes treats and lunch boxes, the authors, Maria Findt and Sarah de lange, have covered every meal.  Just take the cook book to the shops with you and pick a meal.

Each recipe is aimed at becoming a finger-licking family favourite, from a seriously delicious carrot cake to Sandy’s yummy chicken supper, great granny T’s asparagus tart, a comforting pasta spinach bake and an easy mid-week dinner of tuna fishcakes.

I loved the little tales that accompany each recipe, as they provide slices of life that we can all relate to.  Coming home from a holiday, hungry but not in the mood for take-aways?  If you have frozen bacon, a bag of onions and a baguette you’ll be dining on a delicious French onion soup in no time.

There’s no attempt to bant or gluten-free your way through these recipes, just a friendly collection of meals you’ll be adding to your repertoire soon.  Don’t forget to check out the lunch box ideas at the end – the sushi sandwich, no-bake granola bars and cheese shapes are a winner in our house!
