Celebrating its 60th birthday, The Guinness Book of Records is back in time for the festive season. My children love reading out some of the most bizarre and ridiculous things people do to make a record. Inevitably they pore over the Extreme bodies section and giggle and gasp. Then it’s on to the Fun with Food, Extreme Adventure and Body Piercings sections. Yup, all good fun. While many of the records are downright odd: The fastest time to create a balloon dog sculpture? 6.5 seconds, others are inspiring: youngest person to trek to the South Pole? Lewis Clarke, age 16. Besides being entertaining, children do learn lots of facts and general knowledge and they may even be inspired to make their own records one day – hopefully not in the extreme body or food section!
