By Megan McDonald (Walker Books)
The much-loved character Judy Moody appears in this series with her brother Stink. When the family hunkers down to wait out a hurricane, the fun begins when the lights go out. Sound familiar? They light candles, make a fire, play games and tell stories about family and ghosts. A lovely take on load-shedding bonding with a nice message at the end: “It was fun without electricity.” We may not agree when we’ve had three load-sheddings in a week, but there is something special about the simplicity of life when you cut out all the noise and focus on family and having fun together.
This is the perfect Grade 3 reader – easy text size and font and the occasional illustrations keep it interesting.
‘They make s’mores and eat them. It’s a funny book and I loved it. I would like to read more Stink books.’ Joe (aged eight)
