By David Mackintosh
Marshall Armstrong is new to our school. He looks different to me. His laces are straight, not criss-crossed like mine, And his eyes are always looking at the blackboard. Marshall Armstrong doesn’t fit into our school. Not one bit…’ Marshall doesn’t play sports or watch TV (the horror!), he’s pale and freckled and wears glasses (a little stereotypical) and he’s not allowed to go outside on the playground but stays inside eating weird lunches. The baffling thing is Marshall doesn’t seem to mind not being popular. He is perfectly happy in his own skin, which is a wonderful affirming lesson for anyone battling with not fitting in.
When Marshall invites everyone to his birthday party they go reluctantly, dragging their feet but soon learn that Marshall Armstrong is super cool in his very own way. A quirky and witty book with a great heart. Mackintosh’s first book was longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal and shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize in 2011. Great illustrations and a powerful message make this a must buy.
