Milly-Molly-Mandy’s Family

By Joyce Lankester Brisley (Pan Macmillan)

Guest reviewed by Natasha Voller-Young, Age 8, Grade 3

This is all about Milly-Molly-Mandy (her real name is Millicent Margeret Amanda which is too long to shout out so her family shortened it). She lives with her father, mother, grandpa, grandma, uncle and aunty in a small white cottage with a thatched roof. Her family are kind. Everyone in the family has jobs to do and hers is to run errands for everyone. She likes to take her dog for walks and she plays with her friend and she is a nice little girl. One day she goes to see a play with her family and her aunt is playing the piano when her dog runs up on stage and won’t get off.  Milly-Molly-Mandy gets her dog off the stage and saves the day. This was my favourite part because it was funny and embarrassing.  There was a boring bit when they told us all the things everyone did to clean the house and get it ready for her mother to come home from a holiday.  It is a lovely story and I would recommend this to 6-8 year olds.

Parent’s note: This is a series of six books which were written from the 1920’s to the 1960’s so they have dated quite a bit.  Not an iPad in sight! A lovely old fashioned series for younger readers who will enjoy the gentle day to day adventures of Milly Molly Mandy.  What little girl didn’t dream they lived in the village where Milly Molly Mandy and her friends roamed about freely?

The wholesomeness of their lives seems even more sweet when contrasted to the busy lives of our children who seldom get to walk to their friend’s houses.  I love these retro illustrations showing that play time is about dressing up and putting on plays and dinner time is a family affair with no TV to distract!
