Word of Mouse is about a sky-blue mouse called Isaiah “whose life has been one big fright fest”. Isaiah gets separated from his family and has to find his way back. Isaiah is a very unusual mouse – he can read and talk – to any humans who listen. This part of the book is great. On his way, he meets a female mouse named Mikayla. Since he is out there alone, Mikayla lets him inside of her family’s home and shares food. At the beginning of each chapter there are quotes by Isaiah to keep motivated and determined to find his family.
This part inspired me because there are quotes like “be careful with your heart. Once its broken it’s hard to find spare parts” and “God gives us acorns but he doesn’t crack them open for us.” I thought that the chapters were a bit too short. I loved that the illustrations were so realistic and well-drawn and that this book is funny and childlike.
Overall this read is very easy and I recommend it for children up to 9 years old.
Parents note: A heartwarming tale that will teach valuable lessons such as the power of friendship and teamwork and the importance of believing in your own unique talents. Great use of vocabulary – you’ll be making lots of word walls with these words.
