August Pullman is a little boy who looks different from anyone else. Really different. He has one eye and other strange, misshapen features that make children stare at him. But We’re All Wonders shows that inside he is just a little boy who loves his dog Daisy, likes to play ball, eat ice cream and ride his bike. Since he knows he can’t change the way he looks, he wonders what it would be like if people could change the way they see him.
Any book that encourages children to be kind and understand people who look different or live differently is a winner in our eyes. Based on the best selling chapter book Wonder, this is the abridged version for 3-6 year olds. There are moments when it is a little too simplistic though, and leaves out some of the warmth and detail the full length book has.
When he says: “But some people don’t see that I’m a wonder” it would have been nice to have two pages that show ways in which he is a wonder to all who know him. Use this moment to chat with your child about all the ways in which they are a wonder. Think about people who have done amazing things even though they were very different or maybe had people laughing at them. Think Stephen Hawking and Nick Vijucic. We’re All Wonders taps into every child’s longing to belong, and to be seen for who they truly are. It’s a great spring board to discuss empathy, difference and kindness with young children.
