Leo Daly is part of children’s book royalty, as the son of beloved authors Niki Daly and Jude Daly. We chat to him about his new picture book The Giant and the Olive, rhyming verse and what makes for a good children’s book.
He also touches on the exciting state of children’s book publishing in South Africa and how the miscarriage of his child prompted the story that emerged in The Giant and the Olive. Writing from a place of grief in a time of many other losses too, gave him the sensitivity to create a story that echoes long after you’ve closed the book.
He also shared the wonderful news that he has been working on a book of his late fathers, which has never been published. You heard it here – a new Niki Daly is in the works.
The Giant and the Olive is published by Catalyst Publishing.
