Show and Tell

It’s show and tell day at school and one little girl is feeling very nervous about introducing her unique and different family.

But then as each child has a turn to talk, she realises – no one has a ‘normal’ family set up – everyone is unique!  Lammers shows a delightful chaos that happens as everyone interprets the ‘bring your family’ theme differently. There’s a child with step- siblings, one with two moms, one child brings her dad, grandmother, their taxi driver and chickens from the farm and another just her dad and a whole troop of ostriches!

It highlights a variety of family structures, including adopted families, LGBTQ+ families, single-parent homes, and more, promoting inclusivity and acceptance. The book addresses common childhood anxieties about fitting in, making it a comforting and relatable read for young children.

With its engaging narrative and delightful chaos, the story combines humour and warmth, making children laugh and allowing them to talk openly about what makes a family.  I love the vibrant and detailed illustrations which bring the families to life, capturing the joy and uniqueness of each family unit. 

Show and Tell is local book written by Marlene Lammers and it’s a great tool for parents and teachers to discuss family diversity, fostering empathy and understanding in young readers.
