By Marlene Lammers and Illustrated by Anja Stoeckigt (Penguin Books)
This is a yummy collection of easy recipes inspired by animals and the bush for children aged 6 – 12.
A story and a cook book
The recipes are accompanied by a fun adventure story that cleverly leads to each recipe. Mitch is living the good monkey life. As his home is in a tree above a fancy restaurant, his diet consists of fine-dining gifts from dinner guests.  But his take-away days are over when  a new sign is put up saying: ‘Do NOT Feed The Monkey!’  This is a good way of bringing in the lesson that we should never feed wildlife.
But then there’s a plot twist – Mitch is introduced to bush fare extraordinaire! The animals take turns in sharing their favourite dishes with him, starting with a little dung beetle who teaches him to make Dungballs, which are thankfully made from blended dried dates and other fruits, nuts and cocoa powder. Not a drop of real dung to be found.  Shew!
Word play
The recipes are all cleverly named after animals, my favourites being: hippopotomousse, Chocolate Bark, Soup for the Troop, Brilliant Baboon Bobotie (dont worry – no baboon is in this meal!), Kudu-gette chips, and Pangolini Linguini.
Mitch soon learns to start making up his own dishes with favourites like moneky bars and banana bread. Now the humans are lining up for Mitch’s dishes.
Perfect gift book
The 49 easy-to-follow recipes are aimed at children age 6-12 and can be made with and without adult supervision. Just check the recipe’s cooking instructions to see if a stove or oven is needed.  This would make the perfect gift book – especially for kids overseas.
