Meet Pinch Perkins – a 12 year old witch waiting for her magic to manifest itself – and trying to save her mum from an enchanted sleep spell. Yes, just like sleeping beauty, only not so long. Expect a thrilling adventure story filled with magic and danger!
Pinch lives on Tricky Dragon Lane, deep within London’s magical quarter. When her mother falls victim to a dark curse, Pinch feels she can’t leave it up to the adults to find a cure. Racing against the clock on midsummer’s eve, one of the most magical nights of the year, she sets off on a quest that plunges her into a fantastical world of legendary heroes, terrifying fairies, and strange creatures.
Great characters
Helping her every step of the way is her nemesis, Henry de Sallowe, her always-organised and somewhat-patronising young neighbour who knows how to get out of the magical quarter and into the Humdrum human world. As she navigates the treacherous streets and magical underworlds of London, accompanied by Henry, who may not be as bad as she always thought, you’ll be taken through vividly imaginative settings and a fast-paced plot that keeps you turning the pages. This book is perfect for young readers who love fantasy, adventure, and a strong heroine. Pinch Perkins is a lovable protagonist—determined, quick-witted, and full of heart. The dialogue is witty and fun, with well developed world-building, making the magical quarter of London feel like a place you could almost step into. Oh and did we mention Pinch wears a pair of roller blades which pop out of her shoes whenever she needs them? Genius.
Fairy tales meet the future
The author, Cathy Fitzgerald, has cleverly blended traditional fairy stories with modern elements. From crossing paths with the boss of the Thames Mudlarks to sharing a burger with King Arthur’s knights, the story strikes the perfect balance between humor and high-stakes adventure. The fact that the Fairy Queen and King are rather awful people is a nice twist. And Harum and Skarum are particularly memorable henchmen who love to squeeeeeze! While the villains are delightfully sinister, there’s no outright violence so it won’t terrify your middle-grade readers. Pinch’s encounters feel real and urgent, making her journey all the more gripping. The ticking clock of Midsummer’s Eve adds to the tension as Pinch battles time to save her mother.
Perfect for for fans of Harry Potter or Percy Jackson. Strong heroine, great cast of characters, creative magical elements, and well written too – we love this debut. Look out for the upcoming second book in Pinch’s adventures next year.
