Ages 4-8
The beautiful and thought-provoking picture book about moving home and embracing new changes from best selling author Joe Todd Stanton.
When Nyla has to leave her home in the countryside to start life again in the city, all she can think about is everything she misses from before. We see her having an idyllic existence where her father is always on hand to play and take her for walks and to look at the stars.
In the city she can barely count seven stars in the sky and her father is always busy working. We don’t see her mother or other siblings, so it’s not clear if it’s just her and her father in the family. We do feel her loneliness and sadness.
One night when a comet comes crashing through the city streets and starts to glow and grow, Nyla can’t resist a chance to head somewhere that feels closer to what she had before. But what starts as an escape could be just the thing to make her finally feel at home.
Big changes
This heartfelt picture book explores how the bewildering experience of moving house can affect a child’s sense of belonging, but also how it can open them up to new and wonderful experiences.
The book also captures the essence and power of imagination as the little girl climbs inside a comet and lets it carry her to see the city in a whole new way. She is then able to share that with her father, leaving them both altered and more in touch with their new hiome and each other.
A beautiful book to talk about new experiences and changes.
