Edited by Nyashe Williams and illustrated by Sanelisiwe Singaphi (Pan Macmillan)
A gorgeous book of affirmations that highlights each of South Africa’s eleven official languages: Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa and isiZulu.
The affirmations are written by ten authors, adding to the piece in their home language. The book is a love letter to all the children in South Africa, honouring their magic, worth, and power. It is especially powerful for young children of colour to see themselvs in a positive, happy and confident way.
The authors’ hope that children discover the power of their voice through the recitation of these positive affirmations and know that they can change the world in an impactful way. I love the way local words such as Ndlela (XiTsonga) for path says: My path in life is unique. My dreams are valid. I defend my tomorrow. I love the journey I am on.”
Every child should have this book and get to choose an affirmation for the day.
