The little book cafe that could.

The Soweto Book Cafe is an oasis of books, reading, learning and conversation in the heart of what used to be a dangerous area. Plus it provides a safe space for schoolchildren who come to read, do their homework and play games in the afternoons. 

Started by Thami Mazibuko, who had the dream to create a book shop with a small donation of books from friends, colleagues and helpers. When he received a windfall of books from a deceased estate in Parkhurst, his collection moved to more than 10,000 books. The cafe now works as a shop and library and the community have adopted it wholeheartedly, as have tourists, who make sure to stop here on their Soweto tours.
